Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf was an Austrian composer, violinist, and silvologist. Born in Vienna on November 2, 1739, he was a prolific composer, producing over 100 symphonies, 50 operas, and numerous concertos and chamber works.
Dittersdorf's music is known for its melodic charm, rhythmic vitality, and dramatic flair. He was a master of orchestral color and texture, and his symphonies are often characterized by their use of contrasting sections, dramatic pauses, and unexpected harmonic turns.
One of Dittersdorf's most popular works is his Symphony in C-major, "La Prise de la Bastille." This work, written in 1793, celebrates the storming of the Bastille prison in France during the French Revolution. The symphony is full of energy and excitement, and it captures the spirit of the revolutionary era.
Dittersdorf was also a skilled violinist, and he wrote several concertos for the instrument. His Harp Concerto in A major is one of his most famous works for the harp. This concerto is a beautiful and lyrical work, and it showcases Dittersdorf's mastery of both composition and orchestration.
Dittersdorf died in Vienna on October 24, 1799. He was buried in the St. Marx Cemetery in Vienna, and his tomb is still a popular tourist attraction today.
