Novak Djokovic began his title defense at Roland-Garros with a hard-fought 6-4 7-6 7-3 6-4 opening win over French wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The world No. 1 and defending champion was pushed to the limit by the Frenchman, who took the second set to a tiebreak and broke Djokovic's serve in the fourth set to cut the deficit to 3-1.
However, Djokovic was ultimately too strong for Herbert, and he upped his level when it mattered to secure a hard-fought victory. The Serbian is now one win away from reaching the second round of Roland-Garros for the 19th time in his career.
"It was a tough match," said Djokovic after the match. "Herbert is a good player, and he made me work for it today. I'm happy to get the win and move on to the next round."
Djokovic will now face either Hugo Gaston or Cristian Garin in the second round.
