French Elections: A Historical Overview

The Third Republic and Presidential Elections

During the Third Republic, which lasted from 1870 to 1940, France held 15 presidential elections. The president was elected by the National Assembly, and his term lasted for seven years.

Recent Parliamentary Elections

In the most recent parliamentary elections, French voters returned to the polls on Sunday, July 7, to elect the remaining members of the Assemblée Nationale. The map below shows the results in each of the 577 constituencies.

Macron's Re-election

Emmanuel Macron has won a second term as president of France after a convincing victory over rival Marine Le Pen. Macron became the first president to win a re-election bid since Jacques Chirac in 2002.

In the first round of voting, Macron took the lead with 27.85% of the vote, while Le Pen received 23.15%. In the second round, Macron won with 58.54% of the vote, while Le Pen received 41.46%.

Macron's victory is a significant moment in French politics. It marks a rejection of the far-right National Rally party and its leader, Marine Le Pen. It also represents a continuation of Macron's pro-European and centrist policies.

As Macron begins his second term, he faces a number of challenges, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and rising inflation. However, he has a strong mandate from the French people and will be looking to make progress on his ambitious reform agenda.
